St Mary Redcliffe (12 miles)
A place of christian worship for over 900 years.
This beautiful Gothic Anglican parish church in the heart of Bristol, has famously been described by Queen Elizabeth the first as "the fairest, goodliest, and most famous parish church in England."
Born in Bristol, Admiral Sir William Penn, father of William Penn the founder of Pennsylvania, is buried in the grounds of St Mary Redcliffe.
Thomas Chatterton, the English poet, whose father was sexton of St Mary Redcliffe, was born in the house next to the church in 1752.
He was an exceptionally studious child studying at the church in the south porch, publishing mature work at the age of eleven.
